Ginger Snap Crafts: Smile Family Home Evening Lesson & FHE Lesson Blog Hop

Smile Family Home Evening Lesson & FHE Lesson Blog Hop

Hello! Today marks the100th anniversary of the Family Home Evening program. If you haven’t heard of Family Home Evening let me tell you a little bit about it. ;) Family Home Evening is one night a week that our family sets aside to spend time together (usually Monday night at our house). We have a lesson, spiritual thought, sing songs, play a game or other activity & then we have a yummy treat. You can find out lots more {HERE}. Today I am excited to be partnering with some other fabulous bloggers to bring you some fun FHE lesson ideas centered around the talks from this past General Conference.

Keep reading to see a fun idea from our family. Then pop over to the above blogs to see theirs. :)

I loved reading this talk from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. He said, “This is our high and holy calling—to be agents of Jesus Christ, to love as He loved, to serve as He served, to ‘lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees,’ to ‘look [after] the poor and the needy,’ and to care for the widows and orphans.’”

Serving someone else doesn’t have to be big or cost a lot of money. Sometimes giving another person a smile or kind word can make all the difference in the world. :) So we planned a Family Home Evening all centered around the word smile! :)

Purpose: We have been struggling (I'm sure we are not alone!) with our kiddos saying mean things to each other & not being kind. So I decided to create an evening where we could learn how to say kind words to each other, give a smile to someone & make each other smile plus a fun service project to make someone we didn’t know smile. When you make someone smile it really is beautiful thing!

Spiritual Thought: We started our FHE by sharing this quote from Mother Teresa. Love this! :) You can download & print a copy right {HERE}.

If You're Happy
Lesson: For the lesson we each took a turn going around the room & saying something kind about each person in our family. It turned out so well! Everyone took a turn, & they all really shared from the heart what they loved about each other. There were lots of smiles all around. I think it was the best (& longest!) lessons we ever had! :)

Activity: For the activity we wanted to do something that would help serve someone else, and we hoped to be able to put a big smile on their face, too! is a wonderful organization that donates toothbrushes all over the world to those that need them or can't afford one. So we went to the store & stocked up on a bunch of different kinds of toothbrushes to send to them. The kiddos had fun picking them out! They might of even picked out one or two toothbrushes for themselves, too! ha! ;)
When we got home we packed up the toothbrushes in a box!

Then we mailed our "smiley" package to so they can hand them out. You can find our more, & see how to donate to Donate a Toothbrush right {HERE}.

For the handout I wanted to give my kiddos something that would remind them to speak kind words to each other, to smile more & to make others smile. I found these cute walking mouths at Hobby Lobby in the party section, & then I made some cute smile tags to hang on them.

You can print out your own set of smile tags right {HERE}.
Just cut them out, punch a hole & then tie them on with some twine or ribbon.

Treat: These Apple Smiles make the perfect treat!

  1. I love the idea of incorporating a service activity into the lesson! What a fun way to reinforce the importance of being kind. And that Mother Theresa quote is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!

  2. Well, it's wonderful to remember and notice's an easy thing we can do to emulate the Savior in our daily lives! Great thought!

  3. Hmmm so YOU ARE AMAZING, what a fantastic idea for FHE! I love that it is a service project too, seriously awesome! Pinned!

  4. Love how you turned this into talk into an action and showed how we can really apply the words of the prophets to our lives! Such a great idea!

  5. What a perfect service idea! I love how you used this to help your kids speak more kindly to each other, but also to serve others outside your family. Beautiful!

  6. My kids love to serve other people! They will really enjoy this lesson because of the service opportunities.

  7. I'm totally bummed I missed out on this! Somehow it didn't even strike me that there were other LDS bloggers out there. Sad! (I don't do a lot of LDS stuff at but...this still would have been good!)
