Hello! I’m back! Did you miss me? ha! I’m sure you were just as busy as me enjoying the holidays. It’s good to be back to a more normal routine though! Time to get some projects marked off my list. This project had been on my to do list for along time. I am so excited to get this baby checked off! It was soooooo easy to put together. I’m not sure what took us so long to make this giant peg board! It’s definitely an afternoon project, & it doesn’t take long to get up at all. It it awesome for organizing all of my craft supplies, & it would make a great addition to any workspace. So keep reading, & I’ll show you how to make a giant peg board. Let’s get to it! ;)
First, you’ll need to measure how big you want to make your peg board. I measured my space & decided to make a 4 foot wide by 3 foot tall peg board. You can buy peg board sheets at Home Depot or any home improvement store. I bought a 4 foot by 4 foot sheet. So before we got started we trimmed a foot off the top of my peg board with a table saw.
You’ll need a few other supplies to get started:
trim
1x2 boards
nail gun & nails
wood glue
paint
paint brush
caulk & caulking gun
table saw
miter saw
*At the bottom of this post I’ll link to were I got my peg hooks & other storage bins. :)
First, you’ll make a frame using the 1x2 boards. Trim the ends of your boards with miter saw to a 45 degree angle so they fit together. Since my peg board was 4 foot by 3 foot I made my frame the same size. Use a little bit of wood glue & a nail gun to attach your frame together. Let dry.
I gave my peg board a fresh coat of white paint. You don’t necessarily have to do this step if you don’t want to. I just think everything looks better freshly painted. Plus I used the same paint that I was going to use on the trim & frames. So it all ended up all matchy matchy in the end. ;)
We also make a 4 foot by 3 foot frame using some wood trim the same exact way we did the 1x2 frame. You’ll need a frame for the front AND back of your peg board. The peg board needs to be up away from the wall for the peg hooks to fit in. So the 1x2 frame on the back gives it just enough space between the wall to hang your peg hooks & baskets in.
Using a nail gun we nailed the peg board to the 1x2 frame. Just go all the way around every 2 or 3 inches or so. For some extra reinforcement put a thin layer of wood glue between the frame & the peg board before you start nailing.
Put a thin layer of wood glue around the edge of the peg board then sit the nicer trim frame right on top of the peg board. Using your nail gun again to nail all the way around your peg board. Let the wood glue dry.
Then I used a caulk gun to fill in the joints of the trim frame where the wood met & the nail holes. Then I gave the frame one more coat of paint & painted around the edge of the frames so that no wood was showing just nice white edges. The edges will look like the ones below. :)
To hang this giant peg board up we just used a stud finder to find the studs in the wall. Put some screws in the studs & hung the peg board on the screws. All done! :)
All that was left to do was fill my space with craft supplies! So fun! :)
FYI: This is along one wall in our master bedroom.
This is where I found my storage containers:
mini card catalog made by We R Memory Keepers (found on Amazon or HSN)
spinning craft organizer at Hobby Lobby on clearance
small metal buckets & glass jars in the Target Dollar Spot
big metal buckets at Hobby Lobby
white paper organizer made by We R Memory Keepers (found on Amazon or HSN)
peg board hooks at Home Depot(2 packs)
peg board baskets at Home Depot (2 packs)
black metal baskets inside the shelves at Walmart (I took out the cloth liners.)
gray credenza from Sauder Furniture
gray rolling card for my paint from IKEA
Right next to my peg board storage area I have this huge armoire
from IKEA that adds even more craft storage. I love this thing! :)
Can you see my CAMEO up on top away from little people? ha!

This is awesome! I bet you love to spend time in this room to create! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAmazing. The Peg board would have been perfect back when I was scrapbooking! My problem now is I have to have things all enclosed as I am in the high desert area and dust is a household visitor! But love looking and visiting your blog!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! Want to organize my closet? ;)

Home Depot :)
DeleteNew subscriber from a Google+ shoutout from +CandaceCreates. We bought my husband's paternal grandparents' home after his Mamaw passed two years ago, and the one thing I miss is closet space. This would be a SUPER idea for nearly every room in this house! (Especially with our various pets!)
ReplyDeleteI like this. This is so dainty yet functional.
ReplyDeleteI just started redoing my craft room and this just might make it's way into it. Love it!

I love this, I am trying to get my space organized. What are you using to hold your thread?
ReplyDeleteI used straight hooks that came with my pegboard kit. They worked perfect for this. :)
DeleteI love the shelves at the top! Where did you find those? I tried looking around but haven't found anything like this.
ReplyDeleteYou can find the shelf brackets at Lowes or Home Depot. Then I cut a piece of wood to fit. I think I used a 1x6.
DeleteWhen I read the headline I envisioned someone sending far too much time with a drill. Accurate headline: How to Hang Giant a Peg Board.
ReplyDeletehaha! True! :)
DeleteCan you please share where you found the wood frame? I'm having trouble finding it. Thanks so much for this awesome idea!!
ReplyDeleteWe made the frame using some floor trim to fit the pegboard.
Deletewhich pegs did you use for your thread?
ReplyDeleteThey were pegs that came in a bundle from Home Depot. They were straight & went up instead of down. If that make sense! ;)
ReplyDeletewhich Ikea armoire is that??? I was trying to find it but not having a lot of luck
ReplyDeleteWe bought it almost 10 years ago. It was a computer armoire if that helps!
Deletewe just used all this information to create a peg board just like yours for my newly renovated scrap book room....thank you so much for such clear instructions for my hubby to follow and the list of where you got your stuff....
ReplyDeleteGoing to try this for homrschool. Can I make a wider shelf for books. I can get hanging file for notebooks and folders
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure. I'd check Lowes, Home Depot or online. You can find tons of pegboard accessories there. Thanks for your question. :)
DeleteHi! My husband and I have really enjoyed making this together. However, I'm stumped on how exactly you hang it ON the screws and it be sturdy. I understand putting screws in the wall where the studs are but what makes it a sturdy non falling board? Do you screw it in to the wall through the frame or just hang it like a picture frame? I'm so confused! I painted my pegboard a pretty light aqua. If you could just help me with this one dilemma I can hang this beauty! Thank you sooooooooo much, you are so creative. Be blessed and thank you sweetheart!
ReplyDeleteWe hung on ours on two big screws (just like a picture frame) that were drilled into two different studs. You could even use 3 studs depending on how wide you made your pegboard. Just be sure to use a level so your screws are all in the right spot. Ours is super sturdy! I hope that made sense & helped! Good luck! Aqua sounds so cute! :)
DeleteI love this idea!

Thank you! :)
DeleteI absolutely love this and hope that, as a novice, I can give this a try! Can you share where you got the white shelves and brackets from? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThe shelves are just boards I cut to fit & then painted white. I believe it was a 1x6 board. I found the brackets at Home Depot. Good luck with your project! :)
DeleteHey,
ReplyDeletethis pegboard is beautiful! Can you tell me the thickness of the peg board sheet? We would like to build this too :)
Pegboard is usually about 1/4 of inch thick or so.
Deletewhere did you purchase the shelves where the mason jars sit on top?
ReplyDeleteThey are just 1x6 boards cut down to size & painted white. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOOOOOVE the peg board. I have stuff around the house to make one with. Not sure if I can make it as big as yours (space issue) but I can't wait to make one!! By the way.... Lol lol I thought I had a lot of scissors ha ha ❤️
ReplyDeleteBig thankyou for this tutorial. I'm in the process of making a craft room and it will be a big help. Trouble is I'm in the UK so will have to hunt around for supplies. xx
ReplyDeleteI hope to have something like this in my craft room soon! Thank you for the tute.
