Pumpkin Cup Cozy Pattern & Tutorial from The Stitchin’ Mommy {contributor}

Hi everyone! My name is Amy and I am the girl behind The Stitchin' Mommy blog and Etsy shop.  I am a former preschool teacher turned stay at home mom. When I'm not cleaning up or chasing after my little munchkin, I like to blog about my life and the fun adventured I have with my crafts, projects, and recipes. Thank you to Ginger for giving me the opportunity to share my pattern with you all.  I hope you enjoy my post!

With Fall here, what better way to show off your favorite Fall beverage than with a cute cup cozy. I know that it may sound silly to wrap your disposable coffee cup in some yarn but I love to accessorize when I'm out and about and yes, I accessorize my coffee cups too. Who wants those boring little cardboard sleeves when you can have a cute and colorful cozy that you made yourself? I thought, what better way to pay homage to my favorite fall beverage (the infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte) than with a pumpkin coffee cozy. Here's the pattern:

Abbreviations:

ch - chain
st- stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
yo - yarn over
sk - skip

Materials:

  • 1 skein of yarn  in main color and a small amount of orange and green)
  • I crochet hook
  • F crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Tapestry needle, for weaving ends
  • Button (I chose a 1" button)

Instructions:

For Cozy -
(With I Hook)

1.  Ch 17.

2.  Pull up a loop in the second ch from hook

  3. Pull up a loop in each of the next 4 sts (You should have 6 loops on your hook.)

4. YO and pull through all 6 loops on hook (This is your first star stitch)
Ch 1 to close the star (This becomes the "eye" of the star)

5. Insert your hook into the "eye" (ch 1 space) of your completed star
and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook)

6. Insert hook into the back of the last loop of the previous star and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)

7.  Insert hook into the same chain as the last loop of the previous star
and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook)

8. Pull up a loop in each of the next 2 chains (6 loops on hook)

9. YO and pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to close the star.

10. Repeat steps 5-9 all the way across and end with a HDC in the last ch
(same ch as the last loop of previous star) (6 star sts)

11. Ch 1. Turn. SC in the top of the hdc.

12. SC in the "eye" of the next star.

13. 2 SC in the eyes of each star, all the way across. SC in the top of the turning ch (13 sts)

14. Ch 2. Turn. YO and insert hook in 2nd ch from loop and up up a loop.
Pull up a loop in each of the next 3 sts.

15. YO and pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the star.

16. Continue with the star stitch (steps 5-9) all the way across ending
with a HDC in the same ch as the last loop of the previous star.

17. Repeat steps 11-16 ten more times, ending with a row of SC (I wrapped my cozy around my cup to determine the right length. If your cozy is still too short to wrap around your cup,
add a few more rows until you reach the desired length)

16. Ch 1. Turn. SC in the next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 3 sts, SC in last 5 sts.
17. SC evenly around the entire cozy. Fasten off and weave ends with the tapestry needle.

For Pumpkin Applique:
(With F Hook)
  1. With orange yarn, Magic circle.
  2. Ch 2. 12 DC in magic circle. Join in the first DC, not the ch 2.
  3. Ch 1. {HDC, DC} in same st. 2 DC in the next 3 sts. HDC in the next st. Sl st in the next st. HDC in next st. 2 DC in next 3 sts. {DC, HDC} in next st. Sl st in last st. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
  4. Join green yarn in last st of previous round
  5. Ch 3. SC in 2nd ch from hook and next st. sl st into beginning st of previous round. Fasten off and weave ends
Position your applique onto the center of the cozy. Sew your applique onto the cozy. Wrap the cozy around your cup to determine where you need to position your button. Sew your button on and you are all done!
