Can you believe it’s almost Christmas?
Time to start thinking about Christmas crafts! Yay!
I was inspired by this post
@ Crafts by Amanda & Martha Stewart Paints.
to make these beautiful & so easy white Christmas luminaries.
Look at what I received in the mail from Martha Stewart Paints.
{I’m not going to lie…being a craft blogger is so much fun!}
These goodies are going to last me a long time,
& I can’t wait to share even more
projects made with Martha Stewart Crafts.
OK…back to the luminaries. ha!
Here are the supplies that I used to make them:
Supplies: mason jars, Martha Stewart metallic glass paint,
Martha Stewart silkscreen snowflake stencils,
a paint dauber from Martha Stewart (not pictured),
Mod Podge, foam brush, tea lights & salt
I am in love with the Martha Stewart silkscreen stencils.
They worked amazingly well, and they were very easy to use.
One~ You’ll cut your stencils apart. The stencils are kind of like a sticker. You’ll remove it from the paper backing before you use it.
Two~ Get your glass paint paint & dauber ready.
Three~ Place your stencil onto your jar. Smooth it out & make sure it is laying completely flat. Then you’ll take your dauber & dab a little paint over the entire stencil. While the paint is still wet remove the stencil. So easy & just beautiful!
Next I frosted my mason jars with salt. Who knew salt could make something look so pretty!? You’ll put a coat of Mod Podge on your jar. Then sprinkle the salt onto your jar. Shake off any excess. I used regular table salt on the jar and then around the rim I used the coarser Kosher salt. Tip: I made these about a week ago, & the salt does become a little more opaque as it is exposed to the air. So if you are making these for an event or holiday dinner don’t make them too far ahead of time for best results.
Then I set my luminary set on a glass plate with some snowflake confetti.
Tied a ribbon around the top, & put in some tea light candles.
Then lit the candles! I love how they turned out!

If you wanted to make these for presents, is there a different material other than the salt that will last longer? You said the salt with become opaque and not last, so is there an alternative so I can try my hand at these for gifts this year? :) ~J. Burrows
ReplyDeleteI've seen something similar to this using Epsom Salts. Perhaps that would solve the problem with them becoming opaque. So pretty!!
ReplyDeleteI know this is a year old, but do you remember the size of the mason jars? And were those available at Michael's as well?
ReplyDeleteComparing them to the jar of Mod Podge, they look like 1/2 pint jar, but it's possible they could be wide mouth pint jars. Either size would work, though. You can usually get these in a case at grocery stores. Or if you have an stand-alone, indoor/outdoor fruit/vegetable store in your area. Sometimes I even see them on Craigslist.com. Getting a case, might seem like a lot, but there are so many things you can do with them! Plus they are a lot cheaper per jar.
DeleteYes, they are just the standard canning jars. I buy the Walmart brand because they have smooth sides all the way around.
DeleteI was inspired by these and made a few of my own using a few different materials. It's posted on my blog (and I linked back to you) here: http://heartfelthabitat.com/2013/12/snowflake-luminaries-cancelled-flights/#.UqN8KKVOFSU
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy it and thanks for the wonderful idea!!
Wait!!! I love getting things with points (and my cash back credit card!!! how do I sign up for 'Martha Stewart points")
ReplyDeletevery pretty ur project. adorale..
ReplyDeleteCan you use a spray acrylic over the salt?
ReplyDeleteJacky: Amanda's blog (mentioned in story) used spray sealer for hers She also used epsom salts and shows how they get more opaque.
ReplyDeleteLove these frosty jars..... thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHello! Thank you for sharing this great project! I've included it in a roundup of favorite holiday DIY decor, and I hope you'll come check out the post! They're so charming, and would be a fabulous table centerpiece with some holly and berries. :D

So Pretty!!!! Our crafts were featured on Glam http://www.glam.com/imagetips/7-holiday-diys-you-should-definitely-do/
ReplyDeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE these. I live at the beach, and am thinking / wondering, if I could do something like this for a "BEACHY" theme, maybe using sand and shells, insead of the salt... HHHUUUMMMM
ReplyDeleteI know this is old as it's 2015 soon to be 2016...but I'm making the frosted mason jars with snow flakes...Joann has the jars as well along with most of the stuff to put together this craft except the stenciled snowflakes from Martha Stewart...so instead used stick on snowflakes which are white and silver...therefor the paint wasn't needed as the stickers are already metallic. Just used the Mod Podge and salt candle and ribbon...turned out adorable!
ReplyDeleteLOVE YOUR CANDLES I WNAT TO GIVE AS PRESENTS BUT DONT WNAT TO USE THE SALT IF IT WAHES AWAY IS THERE ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE ALSO COULD YOU PAINT THE OUTSIDE WITH
ReplyDeleteMOD MODGE AND FOOD COLORING THEN STENCIL ON A SNOWFLAKE AND PUT A CANDLE IN AND STILL WOULD IT ILLUMIONATE AND SHOW THE SNOWFLAKE WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OUT LOVE YOUR CANDLES
Frosted glitter would work. :)
